TPM Myths vs Reality

The August issue of Consumer Goods Technology Magazine included a feature story called “Straight Talk: TPM Myths vs Reality.” A variety of key solution providers and industry experts in the Trade Promotion Management space, including CPGToolBox, contributed to the piece. One myth that continues to circulate is that it’s more cost effective for CPG manufacturers to track trade spend using spreadsheets, which are free, less complicated than highly technical software and easily accessible to the organization. Well, here’s the reality… The decision to deploy a “TPM solution” on Excel spreadsheets to avoid an investment into technology is both common and naive. While spreadsheets appear to be a free, viable TPM solution, there are hidden costs that can directly impact the bottom line. First, spreadsheets are extremely brittle. It is nearly impossible to tie funding, planning and settlements together in a spreadsheet template. Changing one cell and tracing it back to all of the other dependent cells is a nightmare; and dynamic reporting up and down the account, sales or product hierarchy is nearly impossible. Advancements in technology have opened the door to alternatives more effective than spreadsheets – the cloud. Moving TPM processes to the cloud costs half of a typical on premise solution built on older technology. In fact, multi-tenant cloud-based TPM solutions are more user-friendly, can accommodate an unlimited number of users and offers the same, if not better, analytics, data visualization reports and real-time dashboards.
